The insiders trilogy by tijan6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() I had lived away from home for many years, so there were no constant reminders. My loss never arose in conversation or needed to be explained. Being embedded in work probably helped, and with my main points of social contact being colleagues at work and child-free friends, there was little conversation of families of origin. ![]() Still, with the energy and zeal of a young(ish) person, I somehow moved on. In an age when it is the norm for 30-somethings to move back home, I found myself without a home to go to. Suddenly untethered, I found myself adrift in the world as that curious creature, the adult orphan - simultaneously old enough to function independently and young enough to still want parental advice and support. It often indicates a user profile.įalling unwittingly under Oscar Wilde's banner of carelessness, by my mid-30s, I had lost both my parents. The book takes us back to early 20th century Chicago, where we meet the famous and the infamous, the prosperous and the poor, the scandalous and the straight-laced. It's a trip well worth taking, and Abbott is a phenomenal tour guide. I read Sin in the Second City as part of my research for It Happened in Chicago and thoroughly enjoyed it. ![]() ![]() Q: How old were you when you first realized that you wanted to be a writer? I am delighted and honored that Karen Abbott accepted my request for an interview. I began writing as soon as I learned to read, at age four, but I never wanted to “be a writer.” Simply put, I didn’t think that was a job someone could grow up to do. ![]() The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan6/29/2023 ![]() But is it enough? Sadly, I don't think so. Magnus makes lots of snarky comments to ensure that the book never becomes too serious. Instead of being the son of a Greek god, though, Magnus is the son of a Norse god - a difference that doesn't make the story different enough, but does provide some major info-dumpy moments.ĭon't get me wrong, Riordan's writing is still easy to read and quite funny. ![]() It's pretty much the same kid again, with the same wit and snark, he's just been given a different name. It's incredibly hard to distinguish Magnus's voice from that of Percy Jackson. At this point, the stories are all starting to blend into one and it feels like his well of ideas has run dry. ![]() Some people will shriek "No!" at this, but I really think it's time for Mr Riordan to move on from these stories about young heroes and heroines and Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Norse Gods. The Sword of Summer, though, doesn't feel. As with Harry Potter, it takes a normal, seemingly unremarkable kid and propels him into a world where he's a hero. ![]() I thought it was creative, fast-paced, entertaining and with a great message for all kids who feel a little on the outside sometimes. Middle grade it may be, but I really enjoyed The Lightning Thief. ![]() Tease by Ella Frank6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() To reach for and hold in ones hands or get into ones possession power or control.
